Pero tanto o más impresionante fue la conducta vaticana
de protección a los peores criminales de guerra nazis y ustachas que
llegaron huyendo a Italia luego de la derrota bélica. De este modo, el
Vaticano colocó a cargo de la recepción de los miles de refugiados que
llegaban de Alemania a un obispo austríaco declaradamente pro-nazi:
Alois Hudal. Ya en 1923 se había establecido en Roma como Rector del
Colegio Alemán de Roma (Santa María dell’ Anima) que educaba a
religiosos alemanes y austriacos. En 1933 se le designó obispo
(ordenándolo el entonces secretario de Estado, Eugenio Pacelli)
conservando su puesto de rector. Y en 1937 publicó el libro Los fundamentos del nacional-socialismo en
el que ¡buscó complementar doctrinariamente el catolicismo con el
nazismo! Y en que se manifestó aprobatoriamente respecto de las leyes
raciales nazis de Nüremberg impuestas en 1935 (ver Daniel Goldhagen.- La Iglesia católica y el Holocausto. Una deuda pendiente; Taurus, Buenos Aires, 2002; pp. 172-3).
Tanta confianza le tenía Pío XII que en medio del arresto y
deportación de los judíos de Roma por los nazis en octubre de 1943, se
le encargó una delicada misión de contacto con el embajador alemán ante
el Vaticano, Ernst von Weizsäcker (ver John Morley.- Vatican diplomacy and the Jews during the Holocaust 1939-1943; Ktav Publishing House, New York, 1980; pp. 181 y 316).
Hudal fue clave en la huida desde Italia a Sudamérica de muchos de
los peores criminales de guerra nazis alemanes y austriacos generando
“rutas de escape” (que se han popularizado con el nombre en inglés de ratlines,
y de allí quedaron en castellano como “línea de ratas”): Adolf
Eichmann, jefe operativo del sistema de exterminio de judíos en Europa;
Franz Stangl, comandante de los campos de exterminio de Sobibor y
Treblinka; Gustav Wagner, lugarteniente del anterior en ambos campos;
Walter Rauff, creador de los camiones móviles de la muerte, donde se
calcula que se gasearon cerca de cien mil judíos; Kurt Christmann, quien
dirigió ejecuciones masivas de judíos en la Unión Soviética; y el
tristemente célebre “doctor de la muerte” Josef Mengele (ver Golhagen;
p. 197; Michael Phayer.- The Catholic Church and the Holocaust 1930- 1965; Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 2000; p. 166; y Gerald Posner.- God’s Bankers. A History of Money and Powerat the Vatican;
Simon & Schuster, New York, 2015; pp. 146-7). En sus labores Hudal
fue ayudado especialmente por el sacerdote palotino Anton Weber. Así,
por ejemplo, “él procesó los papeles para Adolf Eichmann”; y “mientras
Weber preparaba los papeles, Eichmann fue protegido en un monasterio
bajo la jurisdicción del arzobispo de Génova, Giuseppe Siri” (Posner;
pp. 147-8).
Y Hudal reconoció tiempo después su rol crucial en dicha operación
que duró varios años: “Después de 1945, todo mi trabajo caritativo se
dedicó principalmente a antiguos integrantes del nacionalsocialismo y
del fascismo, sobre todo a los denominados ‘criminales de guerra’ (…) a
los que se estaba persiguiendo”, y que según él “frecuentemente carecían
por completo de culpabilidad personal”. Y alardeaba de que, “mediante
documentación personal falsa, rescaté a no pocos de ellos, para que
pudieran escapar de sus torturadores y alcanzar tierras más afortunadas”
(Goldhagen; p. 197).
Por otro lado, en forma interconectada, el Vaticano le encargó al
sacerdote croata Krunoslav Draganovic (a petición del subsecretario de
Estado, Juan Bautista Montini, futuro Pablo VI) encargarse de los miles
de refugiados que llegaban de Croacia, como “Visitador Apostólico para
la Asistencia Pontificia a los Croatas”. Draganovic nació en Bosnia,
bajo el imperio austro-húngaro en 1903. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 1928.
Estudió en Roma en el Pontificio Instituto Oriental y en la Universidad
Gregoriana entre 1932 y 1935. En 1937 publicó su tesis doctoral: Conversiones masivas de católicos a laortodoxia en el área de habla croata durante el dominio turco;
tesis utilizada por los ustachas para justificar su política de
conversiones forzadas de los ortodoxos (ver Wikipedia y Posner; p. 140).
En 1935 regresó a Croacia (entonces parte de Yugoslavia) donde fue
secretario del obispo de Sarajevo, Iván Saric, quien fue el obispo que
más apoyó al régimen ustacha. Apodado, además, el “verdugo de los
serbios” dijo también en una oportunidad que la eliminación de los
judíos significaba una “renovación de la dignidad humana” (Posner; p.
89). Cuando se estableció el gobierno ustacha en Croacia, bajo los
auspicios de Hitler, Draganovic fue uno de los dirigentes de la Comisión
del gobierno para la conversión forzada de los serbios (ver ibid.; p.
140). Luego, a instancias del arzobispo de Zagreb, Aloysius Stepinac,
Draganovic fue designado en 1943 secretario del Pontificio Colegio
Croata de San Jerónimo, complejo de iglesia e instituto superior para
los croatas en Roma, cargo que sería clave para sus funciones
posteriores.
Además, otro de los contactos designado por el Vaticano después de la
guerra para San Jerónimo fue el sacerdote croata Ante Golik: “El
trabajo de Golik fue ocuparse de los antiguos fascistas ustachas y
proporcionarles papeles de identidad falsos y otros documentos, como
también visas o pasaportes también en gran parte espurios, para su
emigración a Sudamérica” (Phayer; p. 170).
A tal punto trabajaba en equipo Draganovic con el subsecretario de
Estado Montini, que cuando este último supo que el agente de
inteligencia estadounidense William Gowen estaba buscando a ¡Ante
Pavelic! en Roma y averiguando sus propios nexos con Draganovic,
“Montini se quejó a (James Jesus) Angleton (jefe del servicio de
inteligencia estadounidense en Roma) (…) El resultado fue una orden (…)
por el que al equipo de Gowen se le dijo ‘fuera’ cuando se tratase de
Pavelic y de los sacerdotes croatas” (Posner; p. 140).
En definitiva, Pavelic se quedó en Roma dos años evadiendo la
frenética búsqueda de su paradero por los Aliados. Se movió “entre
varias propiedades vaticanas para evitar su detección” (Ibid.; p. 145).
Finalmente, el Vaticano lo envió a Argentina a través de las rutas de
escape a Argentina. “Un grupo de frailes franciscanos lo recibieron a su
arribo al puerto de Buenos Aires” (Ibid; p. 146).
En sus labores, Draganovic fue ayudado también por “el cardenal
Angelo dell’ Acqua en la Secretaría de Estado; por el cardenal Pietro
Fumasoni-Biondi, que dirigía el servicio de inteligencia del Vaticano
como Prefecto de la Congregación para la Propagación de la Fe; y del
poderoso arzobispo de Génova Giuseppe Siri, un ávido anticomunista que
consideraba a los ustachas confiables aliados en la lucha contra el
bolchevismo” (ibid.; p. 148).
Por otro lado, gran cantidad del oro croata llevado por los fugitivos
ustachas a Roma, de acuerdo con William Gowen –que entrevistó sobre
ello a Draganovic y a una docena de altos oficiales ustachas-, terminó
en las finanzas vaticanas: “El IOR (Banco Vaticano) había aceptado el
oro croata dado que la Iglesia lo clasificó convenientemente como
‘contribución de una organización religiosa’ y luego ocultó su
existencia ‘convirtiéndolo sin crear un registro’” (Ibid.; p. 140).
Además, cuando empezó la guerra fría, los servicios de inteligencia
estadounidense y británico le entregaron a la red Hudal-Draganovic
criminales de guerra para que se fugaran, luego de sacarles información.
Fue el caso concreto de Klaus Barbie, denominado el “carnicero de Lyon”
por sus espantosos records en la represión nazi en la Francia ocupada
(ver ibid; p. 151). Asimismo, ambos servicios de inteligencia “se
comprometieron a proteger al Vaticano en el caso de que cualquier otra
entidad de algún gobierno aliado iniciara una investigación. La OSS
(antecesora de la CIA), por ejemplo, se aseguró de que cualquier informe
que llegase al Departamento de Estado se archivase. Y mantuvo a los
diplomáticos desinformados de las solicitudes de Alois Hudal a Juan
Perón (presidente de Argentina) en 1948, de cinco mil visas para
soldados alemanes ‘antibolcheviques’”. También, “la CIA pagó los costos
de hacer funcionar las rutas de escape de Draganovic durante 1951”
(Ibid.).
Notablemente, Alois Hudal permaneció como rector del Colegio Alemán
de Roma hasta 1952; y “sólo días después de la muerte de Pío XII
(octubre de 1958), el Vaticano le ordenó a Krunoslav Draganovic dejar
San Jerónimo” (Phayer; p. 173).

La Guardia Costera italiana y los bomberos han recuperado más de 30
cadáveres después de que un bote de madera con migrantes se partió el
domingo en aguas agitadas cerca de la costa sur de Italia, reportaron autoridades.
La
televisión estatal citó a la oficina del prefecto local, que dijo que
ya avanzada la mañana habían sido recuperados 33 cuerpos y se había
rescatado a 58 personas. La agencia noticiosa italiana AGI indicó que
entre los cadáveres estaba el de un bebé de unos meses de edad.
La
radio estatal RAI —que citó a autoridades portuarias no identificadas
cerca de la ciudad costera de Crotona, región de Calabria, en el sur de
la península italiana— dijo que la embarcación transportaba a más de 100
migrantes cuando se vio en problemas en el Mar Jónico al amanecer.
Posteriormente la agencia noticiosa italiana Lapresse citó a
funcionarios no identificados que estaban entre los rescatistas, los
cuales dijeron que podría haber habido hasta 180 personas a bordo.
La televisión estatal señaló que unos 27 sobrevivientes lograron llegar a la costa, aparentemente por sí solos.
Trozos
de madera de los restos yacían sobre la playa en Steccato di Cutro,
cerca del punto donde la embarcación aparentemente se partió.
Los
bomberos, entre los que había buzos, habían recuperado 28 cuerpos,
incluidos tres que una poderosa corriente había arrastrado lejos de los
restos.
“Es una tragedia enorme”, declaró el alcalde de Crotone,

Chile. El Congreso extiende el período de militarización en el sur.
Estas provincias queden bajo dependencia de los jefes de la Defensa Nacional y da facultad a las Fuerzas Armadas.
La Cámara de Senadores de Chile aprobó una nueva extensión del estado de excepción en el sur del país, a raíz de constantes hechos de violencia en las regiones de La Araucanía y el Biobío.
El Senado adoptó la medida por décimo octava vez con 22 votos a
favor, ninguno en contra y dos abstenciones en el Senado, luego de
recibir la luz verde de la Cámara de Diputados.
De acuerdo con el subsecretario del Interior, Manuel Monsalve, en toda la Macrozona Sur hay desplegados dos mil 600 militares y mil efectivos policiales.
En opinión del Gobierno, la medida es necesaria para disminuir los hechos de violencia en la zona, sin embargo, hay comunidades mapuches y organizaciones sociales opuestas a la militarización del territorio.
Desde hace décadas, las regiones en el sur de Chile, específicamente La Araucanía y el Biobío, registran ataques incendiarios y armados contra empresas forestales, compañías mineras e iglesias.
La anterior administración, presidida por Sebastián Piñera, impuso el estado de excepción, y el actual Gobierno lo prorrogó durante casi un año.
Esta medida deja las provincias bajo dependencia de los jefes de la Defensa Nacional y da facultad a las Fuerzas Armadas para labores de patrullaje y vigilancia.
La convocatoria, realizada por el Instituto Cubano de Amistad con
los Pueblos (ICAP), se suma a la iniciativa del Consejo Mundial de la
Paz, que todos los años promueve la realización de diferentes acciones......,

El Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC) anotó
un aumento mensual de 0,8% en enero de 2023 llevando la variación
interanual a un 12, 3%. Según informa el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE), En el primer mes del año, once de las doce divisiones que conforman la canasta del IPC aportaron incidencias positivas en la variación mensual del índice y una presentó incidencia negativa.
Entre las divisiones con aumentos en sus precios destacó alimentos y bebidas no alcohólicas (1,0%) y bebidas alcohólicas y tabaco (2,7%). Las restantes divisiones que influyeron positivamente contribuyeron con 0,487pp., en conjunto.A su vez, la división que consignó una baja mensual en sus precios fue la de transporte (-0,2%).

El objetivo que se
revela es la instauración de una presión permanente sobre las y los
sin-papeles para que acepten su asignación a la sobreexplotación...,
Chile. Libertad a todos los Presos Políticos sin condiciones.
Con dimes y diretes, las élites políticas se han llenado la boca y
han basureado con los presos políticos dejados en libertad a través del
indulto presidencial.
La derecha matonesca y cobarde, intenta deslegitimar la causa popular
y a sus organizaciones. El gobierno y sus partidos se llenan de
miserables disculpas por tan «osadas» medidas, pasando del
arrepentimiento a las amenazas en contra de los recién liberados.
En la actual arremetida fascistoide en contra de la Revuelta, donde
bien bailan los amarillos y progres, se pretende quitar la legitimidad a
la acción política rupturista y radical del Pueblo que inició un nuevo
ciclo de lucha en octubre de 2019.
El aparato jurídico-represivo se ha encargado de defender la
institucionalidad burguesa, el estado policiaco y el orden económico
neoliberal. Fiscales, jueces, ministros de corte, han cumplido una labor
nefasta, sosteniendo la impunidad de las violaciones sistemáticas a los
derechos humanos cometidos por pacos, ratis y milicos bajo
instrucciones de los gobiernos de turno. Han juzgado y condenado a los
militantes populares, con procesos amañados, arbitrarios, con larga
prisión preventiva, aplicando penas desproporcionadas.
Todos los mecanismos que el Estado utiliza como el indulto, la
conmutación de penas por extrañamiento, la amnistía y los juicios
abreviados, tienen un elemento en común: criminalizar al movimiento
popular y a sus militantes. El indulto es, sin duda, un castigo
permanente que amenaza nuestras conciencias.
Ya lo hemos vivido en otros momentos históricos. El estado y la
oligarquía gobernante quieren liquidar el proceso, castigar la
insolencia popular, para que nunca más los marginales se atrevan a
levantarse.
Hay alegría por supuesto por la libertad de nuestros compañeros, pero
no hay triunfo, nada le arrebatamos al poder. La propaganda y
movilización callejera como siempre es el factor fundamental en esta
lucha, la que nos permite avanzar.
La libertad sin condiciones de todxs lxs presxs por luchar es la
única fórmula justa y definitiva. Por tanto, el Estado debe partir
anulando todos los juicios y condenas para lxs encarceladxs de la
Revuelta, anarquistas, Mapuche y subversivos.
La tarea aún será larga, porque nuestro objetivo es terminar con la
prisión política como mecanismo represivo del poder institucional.
Over
the past two months, the cover-up of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic by
the capitalist political establishment and media in the United States
and internationally has reached a new level. The fact that millions of
people continue to be infected with COVID-19 and thousands die each week
is now met with total indifference by the ruling elites, with virtually
no reporting on this deepening world crisis.
US
President Joe Biden, who falsely claimed last September that “the
pandemic is over,” embodies this official apathy to the suffering of the
population. Last month, in an offhand comment on the fact that over 1
million Americans have died from COVID-19, Biden bluntly told a
conference of city mayors, “I sometimes underestimate it because I
stopped thinking about it.”
This
was not simply a sign of Biden’s declining mental acuity but an
expression of the capitalists’ sociopathic outlook towards the working
class, who account for the vast majority of deaths from COVID-19. It was
also a backhanded admission of their intent to kill more.
One
week after Biden’s comment, the White House announced that it will
allow the COVID-19 national emergency and public health emergency
declarations to expire on May 11, which will have broad ramifications.
The
Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that between 5 million to 14 million
Americans will lose access to health insurance through Medicaid when
the declarations of emergency expire. Hospital systems across the US
will face growing financial pressures, with the Center for Healthcare
Quality and Payment Reform forecasting that 200 rural US hospitals could
be forced to close in the next two to three years.
The
distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, tests and treatments will be
privatized and roughly 30 million uninsured Americans forced to pay in
full for these life-saving services. Pzifer intends to sell its vaccine
for up to $130 per dose, unaffordable for the vast majority of the
uninsured.
One
week after the White House announcement, Johns Hopkins University
stated that its Coronavirus Resource Center will shut down on March 10.
The university justified this drastic move by noting that local, county
and state jurisdictions across the US no longer report COVID-19 data
adequately, the result of deliberate policy decisions by both the
Democratic and Republican parties.
The
ending of the Johns Hopkins University tracker is the final nail in the
coffin of what little remains of accurate COVID-19 data reporting in
the US. Other widely used trackers, including Worldometer and Our World
In Data, have relied on the Johns Hopkins tracker.
Health
data analyst Gregory Travis told the WSWS that the Johns Hopkins
tracker “is as close to ‘real time’ as you can get.” He added, “Data in
the form of death certificates being forwarded to the CDC have a lag of
at least six months and often much longer, particularly for pediatric
cases. Right now we can say with some confidence that we know what is
going on now. In the future we will only be able to say with confidence
what happened half a year ago.”
According
to a tracker maintained by Travis, 36 US states, or 72 percent, as well
as Washington, D.C., have already “gone dark,” meaning they report
COVID-19 cases and deaths only once a week or less. This is the end
result of the official response to the emergence of the Omicron variant
in November 2021, whose rapid spread was seized upon to systematically
undermine COVID-19 testing and data reporting, a process which only the World Socialist Web Site has continuously exposed.
Going
forward, the only reliable tools to track COVID-19 infections and
deaths will be rough estimates from wastewater sampling and excess
deaths, respectively. Although imprecise, both of these metrics make
clear that COVID-19 continues to exact an enormous toll globally.

that the lifting of all mitigation measures in response to the Omicron
subvariants has created a new, highly elevated baseline of mass
infection near the peak rates reached during the surges of the Alpha and
Delta variants. As a result, millions of people are continuously being
infected and reinfected with COVID-19 throughout the world, with growing
long-term ramifications.
The world’s most comprehensive study on
the impact of reinfections shows that each reinfection compounds one’s
risk of hospitalization, Long COVID, and damage to nearly every organ
system, as visualized in the graphic below.
These
health impacts, combined with the body blow that the pandemic has dealt
to the health care system, have dramatically increased excess deaths
above their pre-pandemic baseline. Throughout the world, hospitals are
in a state of collapse. Emergency room (ER) “boarding,” in which
patients remain untreated for hours, days or even weeks in ER hallways,
is increasingly common, primarily the result of severe understaffing due
to the pandemic.
According to The Economist,
there are now 20.5 million excess deaths attributable to the pandemic.
At present, there are over 10,000 excess deaths globally each day,
making COVID-19 the world’s third-leading cause of death. In the
European Union countries, excess deaths in December were 19 percent
higher than before the pandemic, with Germany experiencing the highest
increase at 37 percent.
The
universal efforts to conceal this horrific reality show that the
capitalist class of every country has drawn fundamental lessons from the
COVID-19 pandemic.
First
and foremost, public health is an impediment to the accumulation of
profits. From the beginning, the use of lockdowns, mass testing, contact
tracing and the quarantining of workers to prevent viral transmission
were immediately recognized as a hindrance to the production process and
the exploitation of the working class.
While Trump spearheaded the back-to-work campaign, he drew inspiration from New York Times columnist
Thomas Friedman, who coined the anti-lockdown mantra, “the cure cannot
be worse than the disease.” The full reopening of businesses and
schools, combined with the lifting of mask mandates and all other
mitigation measures, and now the complete ending of any official
response to the pandemic, was then overseen by Biden and the Democrats.
Second,
for the ruling elites the pandemic has reaffirmed their interest in
lowering life expectancy in order to cut pension obligations and other
social spending to the bone. The eugenicist and reactionary screeds of
Ezekiel Emanuel, who in 2014 denounced Americans’ efforts to “cheat
death and prolong life as long as possible,” have become the guiding
ideology of the capitalist class globally.
All
excess deaths above pre-pandemic levels, whether directly from COVID-19
or due to related effects, are a net gain for the ruling class, as over
90 percent of COVID-19 deaths are affecting those older than 65 who no
longer generate profits. Underlying the efforts to cover up the ongoing
impacts of the pandemic is a eugenicist strategy to kill older people in
perpetuity.
Flowing
from these two, the third fundamental lesson drawn by the ruling class
is that nothing should be done to prevent or prepare for future
pandemics. With access to the best medical care money can buy, as well
as private bunkers to wait out the next disaster as they did at the
start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the billionaires would welcome the next
deadly pathogen as a means to further “decrease the surplus population.”
With
climate change and unplanned urbanization, the threat of future
pandemics is not stable but rather steadily rising each day. Just in the
past year, the monkeypox virus rapidly spread to over 100 countries
where the virus had never been detected, infecting over 85,000 people
and killing 266 so far. At the same time, over 140 million birds have
been killed or culled by the highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A “bird
flu.”
Just
this week, an 11-year-old girl in Cambodia was killed by the bird flu,
and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the situation
“worrying,” calling for “heightened vigilance” globally. Should H5N1
develop mutations that allow it to spread quickly from human to human,
the results would be catastrophic. The airborne virus has a fatality
rate of at least 30 percent, far higher than that of COVID-19. Already
crumbling health care systems would disintegrate overnight.
While
the capitalists have drawn their reactionary lessons from the pandemic,
the international working class must consciously assimilate their own.
Above all, the future and progressive development of mankind is
impossible under capitalism. At the same time as they falsely proclaim
the pandemic over, the imperialist powers are rushing headlong towards
World War III, which would inevitably involve the use of nuclear
weapons.
To
prevent the looming catastrophes that capitalism has in store, workers
must unite internationally on the basis of a revolutionary socialist
program. Through the reallocation of society’s resources from war and
private profit towards global economic planning and public health, a
future socialist society could stop the threat of war, rapidly end the
COVID-19 pandemic, halt and reverse climate change, prevent the
development of future pandemics and provide a decent standard of living
for all. These principles must animate the coming revolutionary
struggles of the international working class.--
LOS
ANGELES - About half of adults treated at hospitals for COVID-19 have
experienced lingering symptoms, financial difficulties, or physical
limitations months after being discharged, according to a new study
published on Tuesday.
In
the study that included 825 adults discharged from 44 hospitals in the
United States, 75.4 percent of the patients experienced cardiopulmonary
problems at six months, such as coughing, rapid or irregular heartbeat,
and breathlessness.
Additionally,
more than half of the adults said they faced financial challenges,
according to the study published in JAMA Network Open.
"These
findings will inform programs designed to help adults recover from
severe cases of COVID and guide how physicians should check in with
patients in the year following hospitalization," said James P. Kiley,
director of the Division of Lung Diseases at the US National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute.
"They may also help shape future clinical research studies," Kiley said.
State legislatures around the United States are keenly watching the fate of a Massachusetts bill allowing prisoners to receive up to one year off their jail sentence by donating their organs.
According to reports, Bill HD.3822, called the "Act to establish the Massachusetts incarcerated individual bone marrow and organ donation program,"
would allow participating prisoners to receive a minimum of 60 days and
up to a whole year off their sentence. It would be set up in a special
parole hearing based similarly on commuted sentences for “good behavior.”
However, it would also encourage repeat donations, and since those incarcerated in the US are disproportionately minorities and
low-income earners, it bears similarities to the country’s blood and
plasma donation scheme. That system preys on low-income earners and
students, encouraging them to consistently donate their blood at
for-profit collection centers, effectively selling it in a sort of
vampiric version of capitalism.
In a 2019 piece titled ‘Harvesting the Blood of America’s Poor: The Latest Stage of Capitalism,’ Alan MacLeod observed that “around 130 million Americans admit
an inability to pay for basic needs like food, housing or healthcare,
buying and selling blood is one of the few booming industries America
has left.”
“The number of collection centers in the United States has more than doubled since 2005 and blood now makes up well over 2% of
total US exports by value. To put that in perspective, Americans’ blood
is now worth more than all exported corn or soy products that cover
vast areas of the country’s heartland,“ he said.
According to MacLeod, “The US supplies fully 70 percent of
the world’s plasma, mainly because most other countries have banned the
practice on ethical and medical grounds. Exports increased by over 13 percent, to $28.6 billion, between 2016 and 2017, and the plasma market is projected to ‘grow radiantly,’ according to one industry report. The majority goes to wealthy European countries. Germany, for example, buys 15% of all US blood exports. China and Japan are also key customers.”
But
low-incomers giving blood for money is a very different scenario from
prisoners literally giving their organs for freedom. The most important
difference is that the proposed organ donations by prisoners would be
the result of a criminal penalty.
The US Constitution prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment”
of convicts, and one could argue this makes the bill unconstitutional.
But the way it is framed means the organ-for-freedom contract is not
technically a punishment — but simply a voluntary system that can reduce
a convict’s actual punishment. Neither is it necessarily cruel, since a
person can live a normal everyday life without a kidney, nor unusual,
because healthy people donate organs all the time.
The
United States has slavery as a form of punishment codified in its
constitution, via the 13th amendment. It is also a country where the
death penalty is legal at the federal level, but mainly implemented by
states in capital offenses, such as murder. US prisons also routinely
implement long-term solitary confinement, recognized by the UN as a form
of torture. The threshold to prove “cruel and unusual punishment” is thus exceptionally high.
One
of the primary arguments put forward by proponents of the bill is that
prisoners have no way, as of now, to donate organs even if they choose
to. That is a pretty sound case. After all, shouldn’t they be able to
exercise that right if everyone else has it? And what’s the argument
against them losing this right – especially if it helps everyone,
including Massachusetts’ jammed-up donor waiting list?
Unfortunately,
the easily foreseen problem is that it incentivizes people to literally
give up organs, parts of their bodies, for their freedom. This is
inherently immoral. The people locked up in US prisons are
disproportionately from minority groups, subject to awful conditions,
with little access to economic aid or rehabilitation.
This
is one of the main reasons why the US has the highest recidivism rate
in the world, with 76% of prisoners released being rearrested within
five years and an astounding 44% returning to prison within only one
year. The entire system is set up for failure and for people to return
to prison, thus pushing them to donate their organs but without any
financial compensation, only a reduced sentence.
This
is another step in America’s descent into, as MacLeod described, a
horror story of late-stage capitalism that one might dub vampiric and
where the wealthy feed on the blood of the poor.--

No to the Biden attack on immigrants
On Tuesday Biden announced he would make it more difficult for immigrants to get into the U.S.Biden did this through a proposal to limit access to asylum. This proposal is now open in the Federal Register
for 30 days of comment before it will begin to go into effect on May
11, in violation of internationally recognized rights for asylum
seekers.
Joe
Biden has decided to continue the long history in the U.S. of the
ruling class making immigrants scapegoats, of using racist
characterizations, of trying to make a lot of people view immigrants in a
negative way. This is a divide-and-conquer tactic for trying to divide
the working class and other people, to try to prevent efforts by members
of the working class from uniting with immigrants to oppose the
exploitative and oppressive economic and political system we are living
under in the U.S.
This
blocking of immigrants comes at a time when there is a “labor shortage”
and a crying need for workers in agriculture, the service industry, and
various other places. But the divide-and-conquer is trumping that, using Trump tactics.
This
a reversal of earlier statements by Biden. For example, in June 2022,
Biden issued a statement for “World Refugee Day” in which he declared
the U.S. is a beacon of hope for asylum seekers. Obviously sham
rhetoric.
Biden
is refusing to take responsibility for the fact that most refugees are
fleeing countries devastated by U.S. imperialism’s wars or interference
from the 1800s onward, in South America and the Caribbean and Asia, in
Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria.
This
continues the actions of the Trump and Biden administrations to stop
hundreds of thousands of immigrants from entering the U.S. under Title
42—which has blocked entry on the false and racist pretense that
immigrants were likely to spread COVID-19,.

need to stand up with immigrant organizations and others to oppose
this, and take up the stand that immigrants are welcome here. What do

Democrats
and immigration advocates harshly criticized Joe Biden over a new
proposal that could stop migrants claiming asylum when they arrive at
the US-Mexico border. One advocate said the move would cause “unnecessary human suffering”.
The pushback came after the Biden administration unveiled a proposal that would deny asylum to migrants who arrive without first seeking it in one of the countries they passed through.
There
are exceptions for children, people with medical emergencies and those
facing imminent threats but if enacted the new proposal could stop tens
of thousands of people claiming asylum in the US.
The
move prompted comparisons to Donald Trump’s attempts to limit asylum
for migrants traveling through other countries, attempts repeatedly struck down by federal courts. As a presidential candidate, Biden pledged to reverse those policies.
The
proposal “represents a blatant embrace of hateful and illegal
anti-asylum policies, which will lead to unnecessary human suffering”,
said Marisa Limón Garza, executive director of Las Americas Immigrant
Advocacy Center.
“Time
after time, President Biden has broken his campaign promises to end
restrictions on asylum seekers traveling through other countries,” Limón
Garza said in a statement.
“These
are mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and thousands of children who are
simply looking for a fair chance for their case to be heard. We urge the
Biden administration to abandon policy initiatives that further the
inhumane and ineffective agenda of the Trump administration.”
The proposed rule was posted in the Federal Register this week, with 30 days for public comment.
Mary
Meg McCarthy, executive director of the National Justice Immigration
Center, said the brief comment period “suggests that the president
already knows that this policy is a betrayal of his campaign promises”.
“The
Biden administration’s proposed rule violates US obligations under
international and US human rights law which ensures access to protection
for people fleeing persecution,” she said.
“United
States federal law specifically states that the right to seek asylum is
not contingent on a person’s status or the way they come to the United
States. Yet with this rule, the Biden administration is creating new
requirements that will result in harm and death to people who need
protection and must flee their homes quickly.’”
Sergio
Gonzales, executive director of Immigration Hub, said the proposal
“flies in the face of America’s moral leadership on the protection of
refugees and President Biden’s campaign promise to rebuild a fair,
humane and orderly immigration system. Instead, the proposal brings back
a Trump-era ban that was declared unlawful by federal courts.”
The
Biden administration faces the loss of a pandemic-era rule that has
been used to expel migrants. That rule, Title 42, will likely go away in
May when the national Covid-19 emergency is set to end.
Officials
from the justice department have warned that unauthorized border
crossing could increase to somewhere between 11,000 and 13,000 per day,
up from 8,600 daily in mid-December, if no action is taken.
Republicans have hammered Biden over his handling of the border and some have pushed for impeaching Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security.
Biden has also drawn criticism from fellow Democrats on Capitol Hill, who urged him to abandon the idea.
In a joint statement,
the Democratic senators Robert Menendez, Cory Booker, Ben Ray Luján and
Alex Padilla said: “Last month, when the Biden administration announced
it would soon be issuing a proposed rule, which in effect would
function as a ‘transit ban’ on asylum seekers who don’t first apply for
asylum in a transit country, we urged the administration to abandon this
idea.
“We
are deeply disappointed that the administration has chosen to move
forward with publishing this proposed rule, which only perpetuates the
harmful myth that asylum seekers are a threat to this nation. In
reality, they are pursuing a legal pathway in the United States.”
Jerry Nadler, the ranking Democrat on the House judiciary committee, also criticized the proposal.
“We
are deeply disappointed in the Biden administration’s proposal to limit
access to asylum,” he said in a joint statement with Pramila Jayapal, a
Washington state Democrat and leading congressional progressive.
“The
ability to seek asylum is a bedrock principle protected by federal law
and should never be violated. We should not be restricting legal
pathways to enter the United States, we should be expanding them.”
Lee Gelernt, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney who challenged similar asylum restrictions under the Trump administration, said his organization would sue the Biden administration if the rule was adopted.
“We
successfully sued to block the Trump transit ban and will sue again if
the Biden administration goes through with its plan,” he said.
Biden administration will block migrants with rule that critics say resembles Trump-era 'transit ban'
The
Covid ban known as Title 42, which has blocked more than 2 million
border crossings, will likely expire in May, and the new policy is meant
to last for two years after Title 42 ends.
The
Biden administration announced Tuesday a new policy, set to take effect
when Covid measures at the southern border expire, that would place
limits on migrants’ eligibility to claim asylum when crossing into the U.S. from Mexico.
The
policy has received wide criticism from congressional Democrats and
immigrant advocacy organizations who liken it to a “transit ban”
proposed by President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration adviser,
Stephen Miller. Advocacy organizations have threatened to sue.
Under
the new rule, migrants who pass through countries on their way to the
U.S. and do not first claim asylum there or take advantage of other
lawful pathways will be deemed ineligible to claim asylum at the
southern border.
Department
of Homeland Security officials have widely predicted that the nation’s
immigration system will be overwhelmed when the U.S. lifts Covid
restrictions known as Title 42 that have blocked more than 2 million
asylum-seekers since March 2020. Barring any successful court
challenges, Title 42 will expire in May, and the new policy is meant to
last for two years after Title 42 ends, according to a news release from
the departments of Homeland Security and Justice.
“This
was not our first preference or even our second,” an administration
official told reporters on a call Tuesday, adding that the Biden
administration would rather Congress take action on immigration reform
legislation.
“[Immigrants] will continue to have accessible and convenient ways to apply [for asylum in the U.S.],” the official said.
As
announced on Jan. 5, migrants from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela
will be able to apply to come to the U.S. if they can show they have a
U.S.-based sponsor to support them. Migrants from other countries can
apply for appointments with Customs and Border Protection at ports of
entry, per previous policy. But administration officials could not tell
reporters on the call Tuesday how many migrants might be able to access
those appointments.
Advocates
and lawyers working with asylum-seekers in Central America and those
waiting in camps in northern Mexico have reported that the app for
scheduling appointments often does not work and is inaccessible for many
migrants.
“CBP continues to build upon the capabilities of the app,” the administration official said.
The Biden administration has repeatedly denied that the new policy is a re-creation of the Trump-era transit ban.
“As
we have seen time and time again, individuals who are provided a safe,
orderly, and lawful path to the United States are less likely to risk
their lives traversing thousands of miles in the hands of ruthless
smugglers, only to arrive at our southern border and face the legal
consequences of unlawful entry,” Secretary of Homeland Security
Alejandro Mayorkas said.
Immigrant rights groups were quick to respond to the announcement of the new policy.
“President
Biden ran for and won the presidency by pledging to turn the page on
the cruelty and chaos of the Trump era and ‘restore the soul of
America,’” said Douglas Rivlin, director of communications for America’s
Voice, a group that advocates for immigration reform and immigrants.
“It’s hard to reconcile those promises with the details of the proposed
asylum ban announced today. It’s a policy eerily reminiscent of the
Trump/Stephen Miller approach and a willful break from some of our
proudest traditions as a nation.”
Biden Administration Announces New Border Crackdown
A
tough new immigration measure could disqualify the vast majority of
migrants from being able to seek asylum at the southern border.
In
a bid to prevent a surge of migrants at the southern border when a
pandemic measure is lifted in May, the Biden administration on Tuesday
announced its toughest policy yet to crack down on unlawful entries.
The
proposed rule, which has been opened for 30 days of public comment
before taking effect, would presume that migrants are ineligible for
asylum if they entered the country unlawfully, a significant rollback in
the country’s traditional policy toward those fleeing persecution in
other countries.
It
would allow rapid deportation of anyone who had failed to request
protection from another country while en route to the United States or
who did not notify border authorities through a mobile app of their
plans to seek asylum.
Administration
officials said the policy would take effect on May 11 with the expected
termination that day of Title 42, a Trump-era health emergency rule
that has allowed border authorities to swiftly expel migrants back to
Mexico. The new rule would then remain in place for two years.
President
Biden took office vowing to restore a humane approach to the border
crisis after his predecessor, former President Donald J. Trump,
introduced a series of harsh immigration policies, including the
separation of migrant children from their parents. But as the Biden
administration has struggled to quell a surge of migrants fleeing
economic ruin in their countries, including Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and
Venezuela, it has turned to more restrictive measures.
The
decision, announced jointly by the Homeland Security and Justice
Departments, was sharply rebuked by human rights advocates who said the
policy mirrored an earlier, much-criticized restriction under Mr. Trump
that denied asylum to most migrants who had not first applied for it in
Mexico or another country along their way. That policy had been struck
down by several federal courts.
Many
migrants do not apply for asylum in Mexico, preferring to try their
luck in the United States. The new policy was expected to erect a
formidable barrier to those hoping to submit U.S. applications.
“The Biden administration’s proposed rule would
send asylum seekers back to danger, separate families, and cost lives,
as human rights advocates have been asserting for weeks,” said Jane
Bentrott, counsel at Justice Action Center, an immigrant rights
nonprofit.
“It
is in direct contravention of President Biden’s campaign promises to
reverse Trump’s racist, xenophobic immigration policies, and give all
folks seeking safety a fair shot at asylum,” she said.
On
a call with reporters, administration officials said that failure by
Congress to pass an overhaul of the nation’s outdated immigration laws
and a spate of lawsuits from Republican-led states had prevented the
government from effectively managing the southern border. The lifting of
Title 42 in May could lead to large crowds attempting to cross the
border, they said.
The
regulation is designed “to help ensure secure, orderly, and humane
processing of migrants once Title 42 eventually lifts,” said one
official on the call, whose organizers spoke on the condition that they
not be identified.
The
officials said that the “new standards” were intended to discourage
people without a legitimate need for U.S. protection from coming to the
border while allowing others to seek asylum “outside the United States
or in a country they are transiting through,” one official said.
The
demographics of border crossings have shifted in recent years with the
arrival of ever-greater numbers of non-Mexicans who are far more likely
to make asylum claims. Because it can take years to process and deport
those ultimately found ineligible to receive U.S. protection, applicants
have been allowed to remain in the country and receive employment
authorization, a situation that incentivizes even more people to come.

APALA Supports Rep. Judy Chu Against Racist Disloyalty Attacks by Rep. Lance Gooden

The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO, condemns the racist
statements by Republican Congressman Lance Gooden directed against
Congresswoman Judy Chu. We furthermore call on House Speaker Kevin
McCarthy to censure Lance Gooden for his racist fear mongering, and to
rein in Republican members of Congress for inciting anti-Asian hate and
violence.
Congresswoman
Judy Chu is the first Chinese American woman to serve in the House of
Representatives. She was first elected in 2009, and has an outstanding
record as a public servant. She previously served in the California
State Assembly, the California State Board of Equalization, and as Mayor
of Monterey Park, California. She is well respected nationally as an
advocate for Social Security, Medicare, public education, the
environment, women’s rights, and civil and human rights.
Congresswoman
Chu defended the nomination of Dominic Ng, who was appointed by
President Biden to represent U.S. trade interests in the Asia Pacific
region. Dominic Ng, the CEO of East West bank, was attacked and
red-baited by Congressman Lance Gooden, who also questioned
Congresswoman Chu’s loyalty to the United States. If there is anyone who
has proven his disloyalty, it is Congressman Gooden for denying the
legitimate results of the 2020 Presidential election, and for shamefully
perpetuating the big lie to the U.S. people.
The
hateful actions of Congressman Gooden and other leaders of the
Republican Party hinge on the “perpetual foreigner” stereotype and have
directly contributed to the sharp rise in anti-Asian hate and anti-Asian
violence throughout the United States. The “perpetual foreigner”
stereotype casts Asian Americans as fundamentally foreign individuals
who will never fully assimilate into American society and therefore
whose loyalties must be questioned. Similarly, the State of Texas has
recently introduced legislation based on this stereotype, banning
Chinese nationals from purchasing property in the state, reminiscent of
provisions of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.

EL PRESIDENTE DOMINICANO EN LA CELAC.

Luis
Abinader, titular del poder ejecutivo de nuestra República Dominicana,
le propuso sin ruborizarse a la reciente reunión de CELAC realizada en
Argentina, defender la soberanía de los países de la región
latino-caribeña; y lo más cínico de esa parte de su discurso es que lo
hizo en representación de un país que está totalmente subordinado a
EE.UU, con la desvergonzada complacencia del Gobierno que él mismo
preside.
Sin
dudas es curiosamente trágico observar a una especie de gobernador de
una neo-colonia caribeña hablar de esa manera, en plena era de la post
modernidad imperial. Pero…!Cosas veredes!, es preciso exclamar.
Porque
hay que decir sin temor a equívocos que nuestro Estado está intervenido
por la USAID y por el Comando Sur. La CIA, a su vez, controla la
Dirección Nacional de Investigaciones (DNI), la DEA a la Dirección
Nacional Contra la Drogas (DNCD), las Fuerzas Armada están tutelas por
el Grupo de Asesores Militares de EEUU (MAAG), la reforma policial la
financia la USAID y la dirigen el FBI y la Policía Nacional Colombiana y
Carabineros chileno; mientras la economía dominicana, endeudada hasta
niveles peligrosos, la fiscalizan el FMI y el BM, dentro de la camisa
de fuerza neoliberal y el impulso a las nuevas privatizaciones del
patrimonio nacional, vía APPS y FIDEICOMISOS.
En
ese contexto, "soberanamente", por órdenes de Trump. Pompeo y Biden,
el gobierno del empresario Luis Abinader, controlado por las elites
capitalistas que él ha colocado en posiciones ejecutivas de alto vuelo,
apoyó sin contemplaciones a Guaido, ingresó descaradamente al
desaparecido al Grupo de Lima e hizo causa común con esa entidad y con
la OEA}; además guardó y guarda silencio frente a los criminales
embargos de EEUU a Cuba y Venezuela, se suma a las agresiones a
Nicaragua, promueve febrilmente la intervención militar a Haití, se
pliega a la “guerra global infinita” desplegada por el Pentágono contra
países soberanos, y apoya enfáticamente la guerra de la OTAN contra
Rusia.
En
otro vertiente de la política continental, en esa misma reunión de la
CELAC, hablando precisamente de democracia, consideró a la OEA como uno
de los "bastiones” de las conquistas democráticas" de la región, condenó
el intento de golpe a Lula porque no podía hacer otra cosa sin pagar un
alto costo político; aunque ciertamente en materia de racismo, negación
de derechos a las mujeres, machismo, homofobia, Estado y política
empapados de religión (neofascismo en fin de cuentas), él y su PRM están
comenzando a trillar la ruta de Bolsonaro, en competencia con el resto
del espectro político ultraconservador y abrazado al racismo
anti-haitiano..
Su
particular concepción de la democracia -impregnada de las
características de la plutocracia y partidocracia dominicanas- lo llevó
en esta ocasión a guardar silencio sobre el golpe a Pedro Castillo y a
la masacre que se está ejecutando en Perú, acompañada del pedido de
intervención militar a la “comunidad internacional” tutelada por EEUU de
la Vicepresidenta golpista.
Igual
en ese escenario continuó su bochornosa cruzada a favor de la invasión
militar imperialista en Haití para apoyar el bandidaje del Presidente
Adrian Henry, pupilo de EEUU y heredero del régimen mafioso de Jovenel
Moises, que inició Martelly con respaldo gringo.
Abinader
ha sido persistente en el apoyo tanto a Moises como a Henry, ambos
repudiados por el pueblo haitiano al punto de exigir su destitución en
manifestaciones multitudinaria
Hay
que recordar que en su oportunidad el "demócrata" Abinader tampoco dijo
nada del golpe en Bolivia, promovido por el magnate de los carros Tesla
y de la industria espacial, Elon MusK; responsabilidad criminal
confesada por el propio Musk.
Asumir
la definición de democracia y hacer lo que hace y apoya Mr. Abinader
contra la migración haitiana y sus descendientes dominicanos/as, es tan
mentiroso como hablar de soberanía y presidir un régimen político
re-colonizado por el Coloso del Norte; al tiempo de detentar una
presidencia favorecida por el neofascista Trump y por el impresentable
capo de la CIA, Pompeo. ¡Ahora bendecida por el guerrerista Joe Biden!
En
resumen, Abinader participó en una CELAC en crisis, procurando
desplegar su vocación por la simulación y el cinismo, dentro de un
ejercicio mediocre de la disciplina teatral. Es, por tanto, imposible de
considerar veraz cualquier otra valoración o interpretación de su
discurso.
Estas memorias surgieron, de una búsqueda basada primero en
conversaciones, con mujeres y hombres que han querido pensar, analizar, o
simplemente recordar. El Encuentro Nacional de Mujeres Ex Guerrilleras
se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de México el 13 de diciembre de 2003 para
constituirse en un "espacio de análisis y reflexión sobre la
participación de las mujeres en el Movimiento Armado Socialista" decía
la convocatoria "cómo lo vivimos nosotras las mujeres: en las
organizaciones, en la pareja, la maternidad, la familia, la vida
cotidiana, la lucha, la persecución, la cárcel, la muerte" y nos faltó
agregar: la desaparición forzada.
Aunque en el encabezado de la
convocatoria, parecía que habíamos incurrido en esa omisión, sin embargo
en el programa uno de los aspectos más relevantes fue rendir homenaje a
las compañeras caídas en la lucha, así como exigir la presentación de
las compañeras detenidas-desaparecidas. Nuestra actitud fue de
camaradería, solidaridad y un profundo respeto por todas ellas, pensando
siempre que eso mismo pudo habernos sucedido a cualquiera de nosotras.
Como sobrevivientes de ese movimiento sabemos que nuestro deber es
reivindicar a las que ya no tienen voz y que en ese momento se hicieron
escuchar, con las voces prestadas de familiares y amigos, por lo que
forman parte de nuestra memoria y nos recuerdan lo que, significa luchar
hasta las últimas consecuencias.

HECHOS
Según
información del Comité Popular de Derechos Humanos en Chiapas; a las
12:00 del día de hoy 26 de febrero de 2023 a la altura de la comunidad
de Santa Rita, Municipio de Ocosingo, Daniel Gómez Sántiz, indígena
tseltal de 64 años de edad, habitante de la comunidad de Río Florido,
fue detenido por miembros del grupo paramilitar “Los Petules” y desde
esa hora (han pasado 7 horas) no se ha tenido conocimiento de su
paradero.
Este mismo día, el grupo paramilitar provocó, como en
anteriores ocasiones dos incendios hacia las comunidades de Río Florido y
El Carrizal, ambas comunidades integradas por miembros del Frente
Nacional de Lucha por el Socialismo (FNLS).
ANTECEDENTES
El
sábado 13 de agosto de 2022, alrededor de 4:00 a 6:00 de la tarde, el
grupo paramilitar “Los Petules” realizaron disparos en dirección al
Ejido El Carrizal, municipio de Ocosingo.
El 21 de febrero de 2022
a partir de las 2:00 de la tarde hasta las 7:00 de la noche, el grupo
paramilitar «Los Petules» realizó disparos de arma de fuego en contra de
la Comunidad de El Carrizal
El 12 de mayo del 2021, “Los Petules”
realizaron disparos desde las 10 hasta las 11 de la mañana hacia el
Ejido El Carrizal, posteriormente a las 12 de la tarde hubo un
sobrevuelo rasante de un helicóptero de color blanco y naranja en las
comunidades de Rio Florido y El Carrizal, más tarde, a las 7 de la noche
los paramilitares incendian el bosque que se encuentra en los terrenos
de la comunidad El Carrizal.
El 1 de abril de 2020, “Los Petules” realizaron disparos en contra de la comunidad de El Carrizal
El
28 de febrero de 2017, “Los Petules” ejecutaron extrajudicialmente al
menor de edad Humberto Morales Sántiz en la comunidad de El Carrizal
Por lo anterior, el Comité Cerezo México y el Comité Popular de Derechos Humanos en Chiapas solicitan al gobierno mexicano:
Tomar
de manera inmediata las medidas apropiadas para garantizar la seguridad
e integridad física y psicológica de Daniel Gómez Sántiz y miembros de
las comunidades El Carrizal y Río Florido, Municipio de Ocosingo.
De manera urgente que se investigue y sancione a los responsables de la desaparición forzada de Daniel Gómez Sántiz.
De
manera general, conformar sus acciones a lo dispuesto por los Pactos y
Convenciones Internacionales de derechos humanos firmados y ratificados
por México.

managed to reach the shore after the sinking", meaning many more remain
unaccounted for.
One survivor was arrested on migrant trafficking charges, customs police said.
Many
of those on board were thought to be from Pakistan. Its Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said more than two dozen Pakistanis were
believed to have been among the dead.
As
assistance and relocation operations continue, a group of survivors of
the deadly shipwreck are struggling to come to terms with the loss of
their loved ones.
At
a temporary reception centre in the town of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, some
of them were crying without speaking, some were just staring into the
void, wrapped in blankets.
"They
are heavily traumatised," said Sergio Di Dato, from charity Médecins
Sans Frontières (MSF). "Some children have lost their whole family. We
are offering them all the support we can."
A
16-year-old boy from Afghanistan lost his 28-year-old sister, who died
on the beach next to him. He can't find the strength to tell his
parents.
A
43-year-old man from Afghanistan survived with his 14-year-old son, but
his wife and his three other children, who were 13, nine, and five did
not make it. Another Afghan woman in tears would not move from the beach
after losing her husband.
"This
is yet another tragedy happening near our shores. It reminds us all
that the Mediterranean is a giant mass grave, with tens of thousands of
souls in it, and it continues to widen," said Francesco Creazzo, from
SOS Méditerranée, an NGO engaged in rescue operations in the central
Mediterranean.
"There
is no end in sight; in 2013, people said 'never again' to the little
white coffins of Lampedusa, in 2015, they said 'never again' in front of
the lifeless body of a two-year-old Syrian child on a beach.
"Now
the words 'never again' are not even pronounced any more. We only hear
'no more departures', but unfortunately people keep venturing on this

General António Guterres called on countries to do more to help
refugees and migrants, and for safer travel routes and strengthened
rescue operations.
Italian
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni - elected last year partly on a pledge to
stem the flow of migrants into Italy - on Sunday expressed "deep
sorrow" and blamed the deaths on traffickers.
"It
is inhumane to exchange the lives of men, women and children for the
price of the 'ticket' they paid in the false perspective of a safe
journey," she said.
"The
government is committed to preventing departures, and with them the
unfolding of these tragedies, and will continue to do so."
Ms

Italy's shores and in the last few days pushed through a tough new law
tightening the rules on rescues.
The

Estados Unidos que se precia de ser un país de
oportunidades, defensor a ultranza de los derechos humanos (en otros
países), muestra una postal negativa que ilustra la situación de los
llamados homeless o sin hogar, algo que pudiera ser el último escalón de
la pobreza que afecta a mas de 40 millones de personas según datos de
la Oficina del censo.
Es una de las grandes paradojas de nuestros tiempos, el
país más rico del mundo, tiene algunos de los peores índices de pobreza
entre las naciones desarrolladas.
Mientras que 11% de los niños blancos en EE.UU. viven en
la pobreza, esa tasa llega a 32% para los niños negros y a 26% para los
niños latinos, concluyó el Centro de Datos Kids Count en base a
estadísticas de la oficina del censo.
En ese escenario se mueven las personas sin hogar que
además de las carencias, ahora enfrentan otro problema: son asesinados a
un ritmo espantoso, según señalo Thacher Schmid, en un informe
publicado en el sitio https://www.jacobinmag.com.
La falta de vivienda es uno de los horrores más grotescos
del capitalismo estadounidense. Y lo que es peor, según un nuevo informe
de Jacobin, la tasa de asesinatos de personas sin hogar se ha disparado
a nuevos y espantosos niveles, señalo el escritor.
En contra de la percepción común, las personas sin hogar
tienen muchas más probabilidades de ser víctimas de homicidios que
autores.
Los primeros informes, justo antes de la Navidad de 2021,
traían escasos y aterradores detalles. Un “presunto asesino en serie”
llamado Willy Maceo había sido detenido en Miami por “cazar” indigentes
dormidos, indico.
Contra el asesino, la policía reunió pruebas de varios
asesinatos. Alcaldes y mandos policiales se agolparon en los estrados.
Se supo que el arma de Maceo había sido confiscada por la policía, pero
posteriormente fue devuelta. Las cuentas de Maceo en las redes sociales
mostraban a un “elegante” agente inmobiliario que promocionaba mansiones
en tonos pastel, mares de color aguamarina y palmeras.
Sin embargo a mediados de enero, la atención se centró en
los sospechosos sin hogar. En asesinatos ampliamente cubiertos en las
dos mayores ciudades del país, Michelle Go fue empujada delante de un
tren de metro de Nueva York por un indigente; tres días después, Sandra
Shells fue atacada y asesinada por un indigente en una parada de autobús
de Los Ángeles. Luego, en marzo, la historia volvió a cambiar. Un
hombre con pasamontañas era sospechoso de haber disparado a cinco
personas sin hogar que dormían en Nueva York y Washington DC. Tras una
persecución interestatal, el sospechoso, Gerald Brevard III, fue
capturado, ilustra el informe sobre esa crisis.
Esta serie de historias relacionaba a los sin techo con
los homicidios. Pero, ¿qué significan? ¿Están empeorando los asesinatos
de personas sin hogar? ¿Tenemos datos sobre esta terrible tendencia?,
pregunta el autor del análisis.
Jacobin se puso en contacto con los destacados
investigadores Matt Fowle y Fredianne Gray, con el Departamento de
Policía de Los Ángeles (que tiene los mejores datos disponibles entre
los departamentos de policía sobre las personas sin hogar) y con otros
once departamentos de policía de las ciudades estadounidenses con mayor
población de personas sin hogar.
Al analizar los datos, se observan tres tendencias
generales: Una, los asesinatos de personas sin hogar han aumentado desde
2010. Dos, la era de la pandemia ha traído un nuevo aumento de los
homicidios de personas sin hogar. Y tres, en contra de la percepción
común, las personas sin hogar tienen muchas más probabilidades de ser
víctimas de homicidios que autores.
Los resultados muestran que desde 2010, en quince grandes
ciudades de Estados Unidos produjeron más de mil asesinatos de personas
clasificadas como sin techo, según los datos recopilados por Fowle y
Gray. Las muertes por homicidio son sólo una fracción del total de
muertes de personas sin hogar, que suman casi 25.000 en esas quince
ciudades desde 2010. Pero estos asesinatos están creciendo.
Las muertes por homicidio son solo una fracción del total
de muertes de personas sin hogar. El aumento de la tasa de homicidios de
personas sin hogar en los últimos cinco años –preciso el informe de
Thacher Schmid, parece superar el crecimiento de la población
estadounidense. La tasa de homicidios más reciente disponible entre las
personas sin hogar también supera a las ciudades con las tasas de
homicidio más altas en general, como Saint Louis.
Las Vegas, Portland y Miami tienen tasas de homicidio
entre personas sin hogar en 2020 de aproximadamente 200 por cada
100.000. Eso es astronómicamente más alto que la media nacional de casi
ocho por cada 100.000.

Romo luchó contra la dictadura, con toda la fuerza, la entrega, y la
generosidad de la mujer chilena, destacándose desde muy joven como
dirigenta poblacional en el sector sur de Santiago. Esta madre joven,
terminó sus días tras una explosión en el cerro de Temuco La Mariposa.
Así, ella que en paradoja era casi una mariposa, muere en un día de
lluvia junto al joven combatiente Pablo Vergara, a quien rendimos
también un homenaje. Cabe señalar, que la bomba que los dejó desangrados
en los charcos, bien pudo ser activada por un esbirro de la dictadura,
fue lo que hicieron cuando quemaron a Rodrigo Rojas De Negri, dijeron
que "se había autoinmolado", sólo que a la otra que quisieron asesinar
también junto a él, la compañera Carmen Gloria Quintana, se salvó y pudo
denunciarlos. Con Pablo Vergara y Araceli, no hubo testigos, y si
fueron asesinados por un puñ de perros, como en tantos otros casos,
quedarán en la impunidad.
